Match Report Girls Under 14’s
Thatto Heath Crusaders v West Leeds Eagles
There are not many better ways to play your last home game of the season. Led by ‘Captain Amy’ the girls started strongly with three quick tries. Megan showing her strength for the first, Ava twice showing off her pace and strength and Hattie kicking a difficult conversion made it 14-0. The game was effectively won especially given the reduced team size due to the visitor’s low numbers and the injuries they had to contend with. To be fair they had a number of stand-out players, with the impressive full back stopping a number of certain tries with her one-on-one tackles.
After rotating much of the team on the quarter, there was a welcome return for Katie who stepped up the pace of the game and helped herself to her third hat trick of the season. The team has developed a good defence this season and with ‘top tackler’ Ella in only her second game putting in some big hits ably assisted by Megan and Bella it was going to be a tough afternoon for the visitors. Some strong running did see the Thatto line broken but this was not going to distract Thatto from trying to score more.
West Leeds were stronger in the second half and forced our defence to work hard, but with our tackle machines Georgia and Kenzie dominating in the forwards it was going to be Thatto’s day.
At times the girls were guilty of trying to score off every tackle that led to some impressive handling and also the occasional error – but the watching fans appreciated the skills on show. Maddie came close a number of times before Becca and the ever impressing Beth both scored. There was just enough time for Grace to finish with familiar scoot from dummy half to finish the game 42-12.
The girls go to the last game of the season full of confidence and the knowledge that they have enjoyed a wonderful season.
